Learning Platform

A platform providing learning experiences and creating assessed portfolios.

Designing an app and assessment platform for HITO was a big challenge.

We needed to understand what the user pain points were. The app needed to be mobile first and work with existing systems.

I worked with the client, a learning experience designer, and a software programmer over many aspects of the app and platform.

Systematic Understanding

The platform needed to talk to existing systems. We needed to develop a good understanding of the conceptual responsibilities of the platform. These helped guide the later phases of the design process.

Mobile first learning experience

Apprentice hairdressers generally only had access on their smartphones. This meant the user interface had to be a first class design citizen.

Solutions were developed for viewing hairdressing techniques, knowledge tests, and portfolio submission and assessment.

Traditional devices were kept in mind

It was important to have a web presence closely aligned to the mobile app. Designs for a responsive website were developed alongside the app.

Administeration experience

Tutors and administration staff needed to interact with students through the platform. The hairdressing curriculum provided a framework for assignments to be given and marked against.

A constant challenge was to provide as simple a user experience as possible for administrators. The design process allowed us to rapidly test potential solutions and incorporate insights back into our thinking.
